The Premiere Pro Alternative for People Who Do Not Want an NLE

Written by Kenji, Content Creator & Strategist · Updated 2026-08-06

Premiere Pro is the industry standard and nothing here is going to argue otherwise. But it is a desktop NLE on a Creative Cloud subscription, and most vertical clips do not need one. Cutiz is a Premiere Pro alternative for that narrower job: it transcribes, captions, cuts the dead air and cleans up the audio automatically, on your device, free and with no watermark.

Choose Adobe Premiere Pro if…

You edit professionally, or you need multicam, colour work, effects, plugins, landscape delivery and project files you can reopen next month.

Choose Cutiz if…

You want one vertical clip captioned, tightened and cleaned in minutes, without a subscription and without learning a professional NLE.

Cutiz vs Premiere Pro at a glance

Feature	Cutiz	Adobe Premiere Pro
Where your video goes	Nowhere. It stays on your device	Nowhere either. It is a desktop app working on your local files
What it costs to start	Free today, no watermark	A Creative Cloud subscription
Time to a finished vertical clip	Minutes. Captions and silence cuts are automatic	As long as you want, because you do the work
Learning curve	Open it, import, export	A professional NLE. Expect to learn it properly
Editing from a transcript	Transcription drives the subtitles, not the cut	Text-Based Editing cuts the footage from the transcript
Formats and resolutions	Vertical 9:16, exports 1080x1920	Any aspect ratio and resolution you need
Saving a project to reopen	Not yet. Closing a project loses it	Full project files, sequences and version history
Multicam, colour, effects, plugins	Not offered	The whole professional toolkit

The honest summary: Premiere Pro wins on capability, and it is not close. Everything a professional edit needs is in there. Cutiz wins on the one metric that matters for a daily vertical clip: how long it takes to go from raw footage to something postable.

Scope

Why a Premiere Pro alternative for short-form is a different kind of tool

Premiere and Cutiz are not competing for the same hour of your day. Premiere is where a project lives for a week. Cutiz is where a clip lives for twenty minutes before it is posted, and it is built around that assumption: no project manager, no bins, no render queue.

This is also why the comparison is not about privacy. Premiere Pro is a desktop application that works on files on your own machine, exactly as Cutiz works on files on your device. Anyone telling you to switch for privacy reasons is selling you something.

Winner: Cutiz for speed on one vertical clip; Premiere Pro for everything else

Automation

Premiere Pro vs Cutiz on the boring parts

Premiere has real answers here , Text-Based Editing, Enhance Speech, Auto Reframe , but they are tools you reach for inside a project you have already set up. Cutiz does the same category of work with no setup at all:

On-device transcription, then word-by-word karaoke subtitles you can correct inline.
One tap strips every silence out of the clip, reversibly.
A neural denoiser tuned for voice cleans the audio on the device.
A real timeline underneath for trims, reordering, B-roll layers and 100-step undo.

Winner: Cutiz for automatic captions, silences and audio; Premiere Pro for control

Honest limits

Where Premiere Pro wins

Cutiz cannot do multicam, colour grading, effects, plugins, landscape delivery or anything above 1080x1920. It has no stock library, it is single-user, and today it does not save projects: close one and it is gone. That last one is on the roadmap, and until it ships, Cutiz is for work you finish in one sitting.

Premiere does all of it, and does it with a decade of muscle memory behind the shortcuts. If your output is anything more than a vertical clip, this comparison ends here.

Winner: Premiere Pro, and it is not close

The verdict

If you edit for a living, do not switch. Premiere Pro is the industry standard for reasons that survive any blog post, and nothing in Cutiz replaces a project file, a multicam sequence or a colour pass. What I would question is the reflex of opening a professional NLE to put captions on a ninety-second vertical clip. That is not editing, it is data entry, and it should not cost you an evening or a subscription. Keep Premiere for the work that deserves it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Premiere Pro alternative?

For like-for-like professional editing, the honest answer is DaVinci Resolve. Its free version is a full post suite. Cutiz is a Premiere Pro alternative only for short-form: it captions, tightens and cleans one vertical clip automatically on your device, free and without a watermark.

Is there a free alternative to Premiere Pro?

Yes, in two different senses. DaVinci Resolve has a genuinely free version aimed at the same professional work. Cutiz is free too, but it is a focused short-form editor rather than an NLE.

Does Cutiz replace Premiere Pro?

No, and it does not try to. There is no multicam, no colour grading, no plugin ecosystem and no project file. It replaces the twenty minutes you spend typing captions and hunting for silences.

Can I edit a vertical video without a subscription?

Cutiz is free today with no watermark and no export or time limit, and it runs on your device rather than in a browser.
